Becoming a Children's Chorister

Singing in a good choir is much more than a typical after-school activity. Here at St. John,s, choristers are introduced to the world of great music—from classic hymns to Gregorian Chant. Great emphasis is given to music-reading skills, with each child receiving significant individual attention. Choristers quickly mature in their responsibility of leading music at Mass.

Children learn to read music in both Modern Notation and Gregorian Chant form. Choristers also learn basic Italian to assist them in singing now and in the future. Choir Chimes are played to enhance their understanding of rhythm and note reading.

Few children's choirs sing weekly at Mass but we see singing at Mass each week a strong part of the young singers role in the church. Since few children, especially boys, can envision the enjoyment and reward of a choir experience, parental initiative is critical when considering membership.

Generations of children and their families have been profoundly engaged in the rich musical and spiritual environment of the Catholic Church. St. John's offers to children a level of participation in its communal life that seeks to educate, inspire and nurture spiritual formation, thus extending its traditions of worship and music into the twenty-first century.

There is no tuition cost expected of parents. Instead, your commitment of time and energy balances our investment in the teaching hours needed to make our choir thrive.

For centuries upon centuries, four procession songs have been part of the Mass.

The Introit - [Entrance]

The Offertory

The Communion - in Latin, Communio.

These are but a line or two long, and are taken from the Psalms, the great songs of the church. You will find the text of them in your Breaking Bread or Missal.

Why are they so short? They may sung in a very florid style with many notes [Melismatic Chant] or only one note per syllable. [Syllabic Chant]. When sung in a florid style they take more time.

And they may be repeated, with alternating verse from Psalms in between the repetitions.

You will find our cantors and choir members singing them in Latin and English.

Choir & Organ

St. John Neumann Church, Farragut

The Choeur Liturgique at St. John Neumann Church, Farragut, is auditioning singers for choral and soloist positions. This is to supplement the already capable soloists and singers in our choir, which has doubled in membership during the past two church years.The choir sings Gregorian Chant and Polyphony in Latin and English from Purcell, Lotti, Viadana, Handel, Parry, Howells and Rutter. The choir sings in 4, 6 and 8 parts. Our choir director is a professional musician who has conducted choirs and singers in churches and opera houses in NYC, Germany and Italy as well as having sung daily masses in Latin chant for 4 years and studied Gregorian Chant with the Benedictine monks. Reading music is not a requirement, but is part of the choir training. These are unpaid positions, however there are future opportunities for receiving honorariums for singing at weddings and funerals for qualified singers.

Why the French name for the choir instead of calling it a Schola? A Schola is a singing School, usually within the Gregorian Chant tradition. Our choir is modeled after 19th and 20th Century French choirs with the divided role of singing Chant in Latin and Polyphony in Latin or the vernacular language, in our case English. At Maundy Thursday Mass we sang I Saw A New Heaven by contemporary composer Malcolm Archer, the Ubi Caritas in the setting by Maurice Durufle, and Stay With Us by contemporary composery Egil Hovland; on Good Friday Psalm 51, Miserere chanted on a psalm tone and then sung in the polyphonic setting by Antonio Lotti.

Come to rehearsal Wednesday at 7:00 PM in the church for the 9:30 Mass or at 10:35 AM in the church on Sunday for 11:00 Mass.
